Dive into Coding: A Fun Introduction to Computer Science
Join us at Birkbeck, University of London, for an interactive BSc Computer Science taster session designed for students who are curious about studying Computer or Data Science at university.
You will be introduced to some of the key concepts that form the foundation of Computer Science and Data Science, including algorithms, programming, data structures, and data analysis, while exploring how technology and data are used to solve real-world problems. Through a hands-on coding activity, you will get a taste of the skills developed by university students, while also learning more about what these degrees involve, the kinds of projects students work on, and the wide range of exciting careers they can lead to.
You will then visit Birkbeck's Immersive Learning Centre, our hub for innovative digital technologies and learning, before taking a tour of our central London campus in the heart of the city. There's also a chance to find out more about what it's like to study at Birkbeck and the flexibility of our Computer Science degree, which can be studied during the day or in the evening.
No previous programming experience is required, and students from all backgrounds are welcome.
Please bring your own device so you can take part in the coding activities during the session. If you're unable to bring one, you can still follow along with the demonstrations and discussions on the day, then complete the coding exercises at home afterwards. Please note that completing the exercises and accessing the post-session materials will require a reliable internet connection.
About the speaker
Dr Keith Mannock is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences who has been shaping the field of computer science at Birkbeck since 1986. An expert in programming languages, software engineering, artificial intelligence, and visual information systems, he combines decades of academic excellence with industry collaboration, having worked with global technology leaders including Microsoft, Apple, Oracle, and Google. He also holds many professional memberships, including from the British Computer Science and the American Association for Artificial Intelligence, and has contributed to many open-source projects.
