Cinephilia — the love of cinema — binds audiences to films, but it also drives filmmaking itself. The essayistic documentary Films to Die For explores how films are born from other films and how cinema becomes a matter of life and death for those who make it. Wim Wenders's The State of Things (1982) provides the entry point into an international web of interconnected works: the film's fictional deaths resonate uncannily with the real death of Cinema Novo leader Glauber Rocha, who declared on location in Sintra that it was 'a beautiful place to die'. The documentary traces Wenders's fraught collaboration with Coppola, his entanglement with Raúl Ruiz's The Territory, Laura Mulvey's cinephilic friendship with actor Patrick Bauchau, and Wenders's connections with Walter Salles — interweaving dazzling cinematic moments from Europe, Hollywood and Brazil with exclusive interviews with Wenders, Salles, Mulvey and producer Paulo Branco.
The screening will be followed by a conversation between Prof. Nagib and Prof. Laura Mulvey, chaired by Prof. Mandy Merck
