Attention is increasingly focussing on the underachievement of boys and young men at all levels of education, including lower levels of entry on to higher education. There is also growing anxiety about issues related to perceptions of masculinity and marginalisation in education, as well as the over-representation of boys classified as NEET.

This event will provide an opportunity to reflect on current challenges, hear examples of effective practice, and consider how collaborative working across schools, colleges and higher education can help ensure all young people are supported to reach their potential.

The event will open with a scene setter from Dr John Macklin, Senior Lecturer at the University of East London, and Co-ordinator of the East London Boys Impact Hub. John will outlining why this work is important, some of the key issues and challenges, as well as the work of the Hub.

Attendees will then hear from two university partners:

  • Middlesex University, on their innovative programme “From the Boys” which seeks to equip year 10 students with media and technical skills while encouraging open dialogue about identity, social pressures, and behaviour.
  • University of Greenwich, on lessons learnt and next steps for their pilot work with NEETs.

We will then provide an overview of our Uni Connect Kick Start Sports project, delivered in collaboration with our university and college partners, focusing on our work with New City College. Uni Connect and New City College colleagues will provide an outline of the project which aims to raise aspirations and support young men from lower socio economic backgrounds with their next steps post course.

We will then open up to Q+A and group discussion, including exploring how we can build on this work with interested partners in the year ahead.

This event is aimed at colleagues working in widening participation and outreach, teaching and student support and careers professionals, but anyone with an interest in improving opportunities for boys and young men is welcome to attend.

Please note this event is for Linking London Partners only.
