Using the Records of the Powerful to tell the Stories of the Powerless

This session will touch upon on BA History, BA Classics and BA Classical Studies but mainly focus on BA History.

An engaging session with Dr Julia Laite explores history is shaped by elite voices; using their records to reveal marginalized people’s lives and agency.

The vast majority of records about the past were created by powerful people, and especially by white, male, wealthy, western actors who dominated (and in many ways still dominate) the practice of history and the construction of archives.  This taster session will examine some of these records, related to an active research project, and ask how we might use these sources to tell the histories of more humble, poor, and marginalized people; and perhaps discover that they were not so powerless, after all.
