Reading and Empowerment in the Autobiography of Malcolm X

Touching upon Year 1's module at Birkbeck "Rewriting our World", this engaging one-hour session with Dr  Anna Hartnell explores reading as freedom, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, education, transformation.

In this session we will explore the significance of reading by looking at The Autobiography of Malcolm X (1965). In this text, the iconic black rights leader describes his experience of learning to read in prison as a transformative act that paves his path to freedom. We will discuss what it means to read, write and think at university, and the kinds of futures it opens.
