Science Week 2026: Interactions at Microscopic Scales with Dr Keyron Hickman-Lewis and Dr Brian Ho

When:
Venue: Birkbeck Clore Management Centre

Book your place

We welcome two esteemed Lecturers from the School of Natural Sciences to the stage who will talk to us about interactions at microscopic scales.

Dr Keyron Hickman-Lewis will focus on “fossilised microbial ecosystems: working together in deep time. Dr. Hickman-Lewis is a Lecturer at Birkbeck. His research focuses on life detection in geological materials using a range of laboratory- and synchtron-based approaches. He is also a participant on the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover mission with the objective of searching for traces of life and habitable environments on Mars.

Dr Brian Ho's topic is “warfare in the bacterial world”. Dr. Ho has been a Lecturer at Birkbeck since 2019. His research investigates the molecular mechanism of cell-cell interactions within bacterial communities. In particular, he is interested in how antagonistic interactions shape the microbial community organization and composition.

The event will begin with the School of Natural Sciences PhD prize giving.
