The War in the Middle East
When:
—
Venue:
Birkbeck Main Building, Malet Street
The US and Israeli attack on Iran has caused political and economic shockwaves across the globe. It prompted the outbreak of a wider conflict in the Middle East. At present, there is a fragile ceasefire but few concrete signs of a permanent peace deal.
In this session, Birkbeck academics will discuss the current crisis. They will address questions such as whether the war is likely to bring about regime change in Iran or, on the contrary, strengthen the existing regime. What are the chances of a permanent peace? Does the closure of the Straights of Hormuz show how much the global economy still relies on energy from oil and gas, supplies of which are highly vulnerable.
Speakers include:
Dr Anahita Hosseini Lewis (Birkbeck, Institute for Crime and Justice Policy Research)
Dr Matthijs van den Bos (Birkbeck, Politics and IR)
Dr David Styan (Birkbeck, Politics and IR)
