Join us to celebrate the launch of Between the Lines, Julia Bell's new book about 25 years of teaching creative writing at Birkbeck. Drawing on vivid classroom scenes and her students' stories of transformation, Bell argues that writing workshops are spaces of democratic practice in an age of algorithmic isolation - places where we learn to listen, pay collective attention, and practice being human together.

Julia will speak about the book, followed by a drinks reception.

About Between the Lines:

What happens when a refugee writes about war? When a troll joins your workshop? When someone finally writes the thing they've been afraid to write for years? Between the Lines weaves together craft lessons with stories of transformation to show what workshops teach us beyond writing: how to listen across difference, how to challenge the voices that silence us, and why these spaces matter when adult education is being defunded and our attention is being hijacked by technology.

Julia Bell is Professor of New Writing at Birkbeck, University of London. Her previous books include Radical Attention and the memoir-in-verse Hymnal.
