Dr Loci will present her paper entitled:
“Looking Under the Hood: Towards a Better Understanding of Nature Investing.”
Abstract:
We examine how nature and biodiversity considerations are incorporated into public equity investing, drawing on a bespoke survey and a series of semi-structured interviews with investment professionals. Investors primarily approach nature through a risk-management lens, integrating biodiversity considerations mainly via company risk assessments and private engagement. While respondents broadly agree that nature-related risks are financially material, only operational business risks are currently reflected in equity prices, with most nature-related risks treated as externalities. This persistent gap between economic and market materiality, combined with limited investable opportunities—identified chiefly within listed water companies—and a perceived trade-off between impact and return, points to structural and informational barriers to achieving meaningful nature impact in public equity markets.
