Cuentos de un día más / Tales of One More Day

(Fernando Pérez, General Direction | Cuba, 2021 | 105 mins | Spanish with English subtitles | 18)

Screen Cuba and BIMI present this innovative anthology feature created under the general direction of acclaimed Cuban filmmaker Fernando Pérez. Conceived and produced in just 28 days during the COVID-19 lockdown, the film brings together six independent short works that explore how, even when the world appears to stand still, the human spirit endures.

With women directing four of the six segments, the film captures the emotional texture of lockdown life in Cuba — where love persists amid sadness, loneliness, fear and hope. A young girl tries to protect her pet dove; Paloma arrives at a decaying house; Ernesto, newly released from prison, begins work at a quarantined cinema; Mara delivers drinks across the city; Gaby photographs the world from her balcony; and Gallo unsettles his neighbours with his trumpet playing. Each story offers a distinct yet interconnected portrait of resilience.

The short films are: La trenza (Rosa María Rodríguez); The Girl with the Birds (Alán González); Mercury (Carolina Vega); He and She (Yoel Infante); The Days (Katherine T. Gavilán and Sheyla Pool); and Gallo (Eduardo Eimil).

Following the screening, Holly Aylett (Honorary Fellow at Birkbeck) will be in conversation with Tania Delgado Fernández, Director of the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema.
