Birkbeck's Leading Voices - An Evening with John Bercow In conversation with Professor David Latchman CBE
When:
—
Venue:
Birkbeck Clore Management Centre
“Order! Order!” is a phrase synonymous with some of the most dramatic moments in recent parliamentary history. In this special Leading Voices event, John Bercow, Fellow of Birkbeck and former Speaker of the House of Commons, joins Professor David Latchman CBE to reflect on power, procedure and the future of democratic debate.
As Speaker from 2009 to 2019, John presided over historic and often turbulent parliamentary proceedings, championed the rights of backbenchers and played a central role during one of the most consequential periods in modern British politics. In conversation with Professor Latchman, President of the Birkbeck Fellowship, he will share insights into the workings of Parliament, the responsibilities of public office and the challenges facing representative democracy today.
Beyond Westminster, the discussion will also explore John’s lifelong passion for sport, particularly tennis and football as a committed supporter of Arsenal FC, and the qualities he admires in elite athletes. He will reflect on how leadership, resilience and performance under pressure translate across sport and politics.
Now embarking on a History PhD, he will also discuss his return to academic study and the value of intellectual inquiry in understanding politics, power and public service.
Open to alumni, fellows, students, staff and friends of Birkbeck, this third event in our series of thought-provoking discussions offers a unique opportunity to engage directly with one of the most influential parliamentary figures of recent decades. Join us for this hybrid event featuring insights from one of Birkbeck’s leading voices.
