Images of the Earth from space reveal it to be a fragile and isolated planet adrift in a vast and, as far as we can judge, uncaring universe. The science of astrobiology is currently searching for other inhabited planets, but as far as we know at present our own planet may be unique. For better or worse, the future of this planet and its biosphere is now in human hands. This puts a tremendous responsibility on our shoulders because not only are we responsible for future human generations, and the future of life on Earth, but we may be responsible for the whole future of life in the universe! This talk will highlight this 'cosmic perspective' on life on Earth, and suggest some social and political implications regarding the future of human organisations on Planet Earth.
