Join Dr Toby Butler, Head of Birkbeck’s Immersive Learning Centre, for a talk exploring how life-stories of activists reveal aspects of the changing nature of environmental action in the UK over the last 50 years. Toby recently led a three-year research project interviewing 100 environmentalists across the UK recording their life-stories for a new oral history archive at the British Library. In this talk he will discuss the themes that emerged from these powerful personal accounts and play selected excerpts that reveal how environmentalists have shaped the national conversation on climate change. He will also show how Birkbeck students and staff can easily conduct their own interviews using the professional-grade audio equipment available to borrow from the Library Help Desk.
