Theatre, Therapy and War: Working with young people in conflict zones
When:
—
Venue:
TBC
Please join us for a workshop and discussion with renowned Palestinian theatre maker and Birkbeck Honourary Research Fellow Hossam Madhoun reflecting on how artists use theatre and performance to create spaces of therapeutic practice for young people in Gaza. Madhoun will be joined by KCL Professor of Global Health Hanna Kienzler in a conversation exploring the potential of culturally embedded and creative therapeutic practices in Gaza, and addressing interconnected questions of healing, liberation, and justice in the Palestinian context.
This event will take place at Birkbeck's Bloomsbury Campus and registered participants will be notified of the exact location closer to the date.
Hossam Madhoun is the founder of Gaza's Theater for Everybody. Due to the dire conditions in Gaza, productions are rare these days. Instead, he and his partner have dedicated their energies to drama and other types of therapy programs for traumatized children at a local nonprofit for which he is a project coordinator. Hossam is currently based in Cairo after having been displaced by the war. In his 31 years as a theatre maker, Hossam created more than 30 productions which have premiered both in Palestine and at leading theatre festivals internationally. He has translated 6 plays from Arabic to English and more recently his war diaries performed in London as part of Az Theatre's Repair and Return series.
Hanna Kienzler is a Professor of Global Health and Co-Director of the ESRC Centre for Society and Mental Health. As an anthropologist with a long-standing interest in the field of global health, Hanna investigates how systemic violence, ethnic conflict and complex emergencies intersect with health and mental health outcomes. She conducts ethnographic research on the impact of war and trauma on women in Kosovo; on what it means for persons with mental health problems to live and participate in their respective communities in Palestine; and on humanitarian and mental health interventions in fragile states.
