What to expect from the event
This interactive, workshop-style session will take you on a journey through the evolving world of AI. We’ll explore some serious challenges—ethical dilemmas, cases of misuse and the complexity of data sharing in today’s business environment—while also looking at some more lighthearted stories of tech mishaps. The event will highlight where AI adds real value without causing trouble, such as detecting scams and improving security. Expect small-group conversations to connect with fellow alumni and exchange ideas in a collaborative setting.
Why attend?
By sharing her personal experiences of learning and working with AI, our guest speaker will offer unique insights into what currently works, what doesn’t and where things go wrong—like bots giving bad advice. Together, we’ll discuss the ethical aspects, the imminent changes AI brings to the job market and the role of civic society. Join us for what is sure to be a fascinating event.
About the speaker
Eva Pascoe (BSc Psychology, 1991) is a Polish-born digital entrepreneur and commentator whose career spans the earliest days of the web to today’s debates on ethical AI. After studying Psychology at Birkbeck and beginning a PhD on decision-making systems for nuclear power stations, she pivoted to the emerging World Wide Web in the mid-1990s. Inspired by Tim Berners-Lee’s new protocols and before the presence of laptops and Wi-Fi, Eva co-founded Cyberia, the world’s first Internet café. Its success spawned sister sites in cities including Paris, Tokyo and Bangkok. In 1999 she co-founded Topshop Online, building the UK’s first high-street fashion e-commerce operation. Since leaving in 2008, Eva has supported female fashion founders, introduced Shopify to hundreds of UK fashion and beauty brands, and continues to advise on global e-commerce growth. She is a Digital Retail commentator for Sky News, a contributor to The Guardian, as well as Deputy Chair of the Royal Society of Arts, where she notably runs Creative AI Hackathons with Google. She describes herself as adept at “spotting the next wave before it breaks, and making tech human, playful and culturally and ethically alive”.
