The publication of the government’s Post-16 Education and Skills White Paper confirmed that V Levels “will become the sole vocational qualification pathway at level 3 for 16–19-year-olds.” The subsequent consultation on post-16 provision at level 3 and below has now closed, and a government response setting out the next steps for V Levels is expected in the spring. With Applied General Qualifications scheduled for defunding in 2026–27 and 2027–28, school sixth forms and colleges are facing increasing challenges in shaping a viable and attractive level 3 offer for prospective students.
On the 24th, Ria Bhatta Head of Stakeholder Engagement Pearson, will be looking in detail at the DfE’s plans for the rollout of V Levels from 2027 onwards, as well as the latest on qualification developments at level 2.
This will be followed by an update from Noni Csogor, Research and Policy Manager at The Sixth Form Colleges Association on the Protect Student Choice Campaign's work to push government for a delay to defunding for Applied General Qualifications.
We will also be inviting partners to share their views, including for colleges, their plans for delivery in 2026-27 and for our university partners on the potential impact on admissions to HE and outreach work. Opportunities for collaboration will also be explored, with a focus on benefiting both partners and learners.
These meetings are aimed at FE staff, including teaching and curriculum leads and managers, careers advisers, as well as university colleagues in admissions and widening participation roles. However, anyone with an interest in BTEC learners and progression to HE, as well as the latest policy updates in this space, is welcome to attend.
