Thousands of people - Ukrainians, Russians, and others - are now serving lengthy jail sentences for protesting against Russia's war in Ukraine. Some were jailed for actions, such as firebombing miltiary recruitment centres - some for writing a few words on social media.

We will tell the story of some who used their final statement in court not to appeal for mercy but to call on their fellow citizens to take action against the war, with:

  • A semi-staged reading of protesters' speeches, just published in Voices Against Putin's War: Protesters' Defiant Speeches in Russian Courts
  • Panel discussion with Simon Pirani (editor, Voices against Putin's War), Brendan McGeever (Co-Director of the Birkbeck Institute for the Study of Antisemitism), Bill Bowring (Emeritus Professor of Law at Birkbeck Law School), Sarah Marks (Senior Lecturer in the School of Historical Studies and Director of the Birkbeck Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Mental Health) and Nick Evans (Lecturer in the School of Historical Studies)
