In 2023, Digital Skills trainer David Reilly made a powerful personal discovery when he used virtual
reality headsets to support his father during the early stages of dementia by allowing him to
experience familiar places from a care home. The experience revealed the potential of immersive
technology to stimulate memory, emotion, and connection. This breakthrough led to a 3-
month commission from Surrey County Council to explore the use of virtual reality in dementia care,
focusing on how immersive environments can enhance wellbeing, recall, and emotional engagement
among older adults. In this session David will share his experience and participants will be able to try
the Virtual Reality experiences he created for his father and elderly patients.
