We are delighted to continue our new series of thought-provoking discussions at Birkbeck, led by our former Vice-Chancellor Professor David Latchman CBE, President of the Birkbeck Fellowship. Join us for this hybrid event featuring insights from Birkbeck’s leading voices.

Each event in the series features a prominent member of the Birkbeck community in conversation with Professor Latchman, exploring ideas, careers and public life. Open to alumni, fellows, students, staff and friends of Birkbeck, these events provide an opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue, exchange ideas, and strengthen connections within Birkbeck’s community.

In this second event of the series, Professor Latchman will be joined by Dame Melanie Dawes, Chief Executive of Ofcom and Birkbeck Fellow. Dame Melanie will discuss Ofcom’s leadership role in implementing the Online Safety Act – the UK’s landmark legislation designed to make the internet safer by tackling illegal content, reducing online harms and protecting children. She will share insights into the future of online regulation, the responsibilities of tech platforms and how society can balance freedom of expression with safety in the digital age. Before joining Ofcom in 2020, Dame Melanie worked as an economist and senior civil servant, advising government on public policy and regulation. She gained an MSc in Economics from Birkbeck in 1989 and was elected as a Birkbeck Fellow in 2022.

The conversation will be followed by an audience Q&A.
