Venue: Birkbeck 43 Gordon Square

Book your place

With the festive season round the corner, the team at MIR (The Mechanics Institute Review) warmly invites you to its first live Open Mic event of 2025 on Friday, December 5th at the Keynes Library, Gordon Square, from 6pm to 9pm. The event will include between eight to ten readings, both prose and poetry, from current Birkbeck BA and MA creative writing students, lecturers, and a special performance from Birkbeck alumni Charlotte Northall.

Charlotte Northall is a London-based writer whose work moves between the raw and the transcendent. Her debut, Practicing Dying, blends autobiography and cultural criticism to explore addiction, capitalism, and spirituality. She works with rough sleepers, supporting those living with addiction and dual diagnoses. Copies available via the press’s website at www.pilotpress.co.uk/catalogue or for wholesale distribution through Public Knowledge Books.

If you’re a current student interested in reading your own writing at the event or a famous piece of writing by another author, please send a piece of prose (up to 1,500 words) or two poems (approximate 8 - 10 mins reading time) to mironlineeditor@gmail.com and copy in tzaki03@student.bbk.ac.uk by Friday 5pm 28th Of November.

Emails should be titled ‘MIR Open Mic Submission’ as the subject line of the email and should include your name, the title(s) of your piece(s), and a contact email address at the top of the first page.

Please note that not everyone who submits will be able to read this time around, but we will be happy to include your material for future events.

We look forward to your reading and seeing you there!
