Portuguese archaeology after the carnation revolution: the 50layers project

Cristina Gameiro (Centro de Arquelogia da Universidade de Lisboa)

The 50LAYERS project explores the different layers of prehistoric archaeology before and after April 25, questioning the political dimension of ideas, concepts and methodologies that frame archaeological practice. It is structured around three questions:

1) How did narratives of prehistory develop in Portugal?

2) How do prehistorians frame and present the political significance of their work, contributing to or altering the limits and possibilities of the conditions of different political regimes and socio-cultural contexts?

3) How can prehistoric archaeology actively intervene in the challenges of democracy, and in what ways can prehistorians demonstrate civic responsibility in their research?

Cristina is currently the Principal Investigator of 50LAYERS - 50 layers of a revolution: Prehistoric archaeology after April 25th, 1974, project funded by the FCT. She is an Assistant Professor at the University of Lisbon (Portugal), and a researcher at UNIARQ (Archaeology Centre for Archaeology of the Lisbon University).
