We are pleased to announce the 3rd Seminar Series on Governance, Institutions, and Sustainability jointly hosted by the Centre for Political Economy and Institutional Studies and by the Birkbeck Responsible Business Centre, within the Birkbeck Business School.
In our rapidly evolving world, the intricate web connecting governance, institutions, and sustainability has become increasingly prominent. We invite scholars, researchers, and practitioners to enhance this very important debate and to join us in exploring the profound intertwining of these critical elements at our upcoming seminar series.
Abstract
Despite extensive research on stakeholder theory and organisational values, we still lack systematic understanding of how managers’ stated organisational values shape their prioritisation of internal and external stakeholders. Using an abductive research design, we iteratively engaged with empirical observations and existing theories to identify latent conceptual dimensions overlooked by prior research. We show that managers who emphasise employees’ behavioural values (‘what employees should do’) tend to prioritise internal stakeholders and engage selectively with external stakeholders directly linked to profit-making activities. By contrast, managers who focus on core organisational character values (‘what the company is about’) prioritise a broader range of external stakeholders, including institutions and society. Some managers hold values more narrowly connected to the production process, and demonstrate concern for the environment. We discuss the management approaches associated with these value orientations and stakeholders’ prioritisation. We derive implications for stakeholder theory, management practice, and public policy.
