Behind the Bench: Tackling Antibiotic Resistance
When:
—
Venue:
Birkbeck Central
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing local and global health crisis. A recent WHO report revealed a sharp rise in antibiotic-resistant infections worldwide, with one in six hospital cases now untreatable by standard antibiotics. This alarming trend threatens modern medicine and underscores the urgent need for collective action, through awareness, responsible antibiotic use, and innovation, to safeguard our future.
Join us at the School of Natural Sciences, Birkbeck, University of London, to play to part on the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW 2025) with a special Research Outreach and Public Engagement Event organised by the Mycobacteria Research Laboratory (MRL) at the Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology (ISMB).
This interactive open-morning (hybrid) event will highlight ongoing research on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and novel drug discovery. It will open with a few welcoming remarks, followed by a short taster lecture by Professor Sanjib Bhakta, shedding light on current challenges and innovations in tackling infectious bacterial diseases.
Visitors will then have the opportunity to explore poster presentations by researchers from the ISMB-MRL Group, showcasing cutting-edge findings and translational UKRI-funded projects. The session will conclude with a guided small group tour of the research laboratories, offering a unique behind-the-scenes look at experimental approaches used in antibiotic discovery and resistance studies.
This event is open to home and international high-school students (Year 11 – 13), graduates and post-graduates, PhD students, postdocs, academic/industry staff, collaborators, and members of the public interested in science, health, and innovation to tackle this local and global challenge of our time.
Registration required.
