Refrain… Part I: A Sonic-Cinematic Immersion in Iraqi and Arab Nihilism

Refrain... is an experimental sound and visual art project combining film documentation with poetic reflection on the desecration of Iraq and the continuing horrors afflicting the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT).
This work forms part of the Democratic Futures Media Ecology (De-FmE) series, which explores the intersections of critical performance art, social commentary, and philosophical praxis.
Part I of Refrain... will take place at BIMI, Birkbeck Cinema, on 31 October 2025, with Part II following at DJAM, SOAS, on 5 November 2025.
The BIMI event will feature:
- Two documentary films on post-2003 Iraq
- A live Arabic poetry recital by internationally acclaimed poet Dr. Amal Al-Jubouri
- Multilingual interpretations of the poetry
- An experimental live sonic improvisation, Turntable Theory and Piano Praxis, featuring Ming Yang, Shian Ying, and Kinara
In the foyer, audiences can experience a parallel sound-art installation — the Original Soundtrack to the Project (OSP) — an immersive composition series accompanied by a book launch featuring three new titles.
