Inside the Legal Professions and Why Commercial Awareness Matters
When:
—
Venue:
Birkbeck Clore Management Centre
Hosted by Birkbeck Law School in cooperation with Legal Link, this special event is designed for current and prospective law students seeking to gain first-hand insight into the realities of working in the legal profession and the skills needed to thrive.
We are delighted to welcome Simon Davis, Deputy Chair of Birkbeck’s Board of Governors, former Clifford Chance partner, and past President of the Law Society of England and Wales. Drawing on his distinguished career, Simon will provide a candid perspective on the practicalities of working in law.
Our second speaker, Chris Howard, University Partnerships Director at BARBRI Global and Co-Vice Chair of the International Bar Association’s Future of Legal Services Commission, will turn the spotlight on Commercial Awareness—explaining its core components, why it is essential for aspiring lawyers, and how to develop it effectively. A qualified solicitor since 2003, Chris specialised in Construction Law at Trowers & Hamlins, is the founding Director of the Professional Law Institute, and lectures widely on the Future of Legal Practice and Education, including the impact of legal and foundational technologies.
The evening will conclude with recent Birkbeck Alumni sharing their experiences transitioning from University to work, followed by an interactive Q&A session and an informal networking reception (8:00–9:00 pm), giving students, speakers, and members of Birkbeck Law School a chance to connect and continue the conversation.
Whether you are considering studying law, already on your path, or joining us from another institution, this event will offer practical insights, professional inspiration, and valuable connections for your journey into the legal profession.
