Sami Zubaida was co-founder of Birkbeck's Department of Politics and Sociology in 1971, where he subsequently spent the rest of his academic career until retirement in 2004. Sami was a distinguished scholar of Middle Eastern politics and societies, Islam and the law. He also wrote extensively on transnational culinary cultures, and was a central figure in Birkbeck's social and intellectual life, as well as the many other institutions in the UK and abroad where he held visiting and honorary positions. Friends and colleagues will pay tribute to Sami's life and work across the decades in a roundtable discussion, with an introduction from Birkbeck Vice-Chancellor Sally Wheeler and an appreciation from Professor Deniz Kandiyoti. A reception will follow: colleagues, friends and students are warmly welcome to attend.

Free access to Professor Zubaida's articles for the journal Economy & Society where he was an editor are available here.
