The 2024 election of Donald Trump surfaced a trend surprising to many observers: the upsurge in support for Trump and other right-wing figures among Black, Latino, and Asian American voters, as well as young people who have long identified a part of the liberal and progressive base.

In the last decade, scholar activist Daniel Martinez HoSang has studied and chronicled these shifts, including by attending right wing conferences and rallies to understand how that the MAGA movement has built new inroads for people of color and other parts of the progressive base. The research pays particular attention the ways the right is making direct appeals to identity, culture, and organizing issues that have long been the domain of the left

In this talk, Martinez-HoSang will describe some of the events and rallies he has attended, and the interviews with people of color on the right he has conducted. The talk will also consider the implications these appeals and tactics have for progressive political strategy and practice.
