LA Cinemaíz Fundraiser Screening 'For Loved Ones in LA'
This event is programmed by LA Cinemaíz Film Club, a new film series focusing on diasporic narratives from the US. The films selected for this series highlight the Chicanx/Chicane, Immigrant, first-generation, mixed-status households, border stories, Chumash and Tongva Indigenous communities, and much more, in Los Angeles, Texas, Chicago and other parts of the US.
The screening will feature Angeleno shorts made by Angelenos themselves--- filmmakers included are Free Man Agyapong, Sebastian Gonzalez, Shireen Alihaji, Melina Aguilar, Ruben Preciado, and work by young community creatives from the Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory. Through these films, we get a real look at the City of Angels, in all its vibrant neon lights, well-preserved murals, Spanglish dialogues, cement bridges and freeways, intergenerational experiences, and reclaiming public space through dance choreographies and skateboarding with a soundtrack that includes nothing but the 'oldies, but goodies'.
With our communities being targeted in the US, we want to ensure we use this platform and programme to hear from loved ones directly affected by these realities while also sharing some joyous, special moments that warm our corazones across borders.
This is a free screening, but there will be a QR code available to make donations to those affected by deportations in Los Angeles. Donations made will be sent to CHIRLA, California's largest Immigrant Rights Organisation.'
