The Ark: Survival of the Fittest + A Conversation with Molly Dineen
Ecstatic Truths is delighted to host BAFTA-winning filmmaker Molly Dineen for a rare screening of the first episode of her landmark series The Ark.
Originally broadcast on BBC Two in 1993, The Ark is an intimate, ground-level portrait of upheaval at London Zoo. Equal parts enlightening and moving, this first part of Dineen’s multi-pronged interrogation of the institution in a state of uncertainty focuses on the zookeepers as they balance their care for the animals with the instability of their employment. Despite the film’s investigative lens, its focus on the emotional fallout of a logistical crisis, as well as Dineen’s own intervention as an interviewer, betrays a personal investment in the subjects.
We will welcome Molly Dineen in person after the screening for a conversation and Q&A. Dineen says she has spent a lifetime making the same film; we’ll be reflecting on this with her, and exploring her career’s work of documenting everything from zoos to tube stations to Spice Girls. We’ll also have a chance to hear about her upcoming project, in which for the first time, she turns the camera on herself, recounting her upbringing through her extensive personal archive of home video and family footage.
