British Theatre and the Assault on Gaza
When:
—
Venue:
Birkbeck 43 Gordon Square
The Israeli military assault on Gaza has exposed tensions and contradictions within the British theatre industry. While some theatremakers have sought to organise fundraisers for Palestinian causes and stage works expressing political solidarity, larger venues and cultural institutions have been more circumspect about condemning the slaughter or providing artists with a platform to address it. What can this moment teach us about theatre's place in the world? This discussion, organised by the Performance and Political Economy Research Collective, will consider the strategy of cultural boycott, recent instances of theatre censorship, and how performance can be a tool in the hands of activists.
