Scopus is a an abstract and citation database available to all Birkbeck students and staff to use when finding journal articles. Containing over 97 million records and with broad multi-disciplinary appeal, this is a database that can offer value to all members of the Birkbeck community. In addition to searching for articles, Scopus has many other features that can be used to improve and expand your results, such as seeing citing documents (references and 'cited by'), author profiles, exporting results, and more.
This one-hour session will give provide an overview of Scopus covering the following:
- An introduction to Scopus, explaining what it is and why you might want to use it.
- Explain how to use 'Boolean Operators' effectively to enhance your search when using Scopus (and other databases).
- Provide a demonstration of how to use Scopus for searching and finding highly cited and relevant articles for your subject.
- Using other features that are also available to enhance your results.
- Teach you where to find articles that were not available in full-text.
- A chance to try and use Scopus yourself.
- A Q&A at the end to cover anything else.
This workshop is aimed at anyone that is interested in improving their literature searching skills but in particular, students completing dissertations may find this the most useful to attend. Staff may also find this event useful to attend to learn more about supporting their teaching and research needs.
