Come and join us for our MSc Geography and MSc Sustainable Cities Offer Holder afternoon.

Both programmes are a part of the School of Social Sciences.

You will have the opportunity to chat with our staff Dr Mara Nogueira and find out more about the programme.

Dr Mara Nogueira is the Director of the MSc Sustainable Cities and the MSc Geography. She is a Lecturer in Urban Geography at Birkbeck who works on urban inequalities, informality, and food justice.

This lecture is a taster session for the MSc Geography and the MSc Sustainable Cities at Birkbeck. It provides an overview of a fieldtrip module offered to both programmes: Critical Infrastructures for Sustainability – London Thames Fieldtrip. The taster will be followed by a Q&A.

The river Thames is a London landmark but also a key urban infrastructure that has facilitated the commercial and industrial success of the city. In the context of the current ecological crisis, the river is also under pressure due to a series of environmental challenges facing the city, such as floods, draughts, waste management and access to water. The river is also a site of urban regeneration where industrial warehouses are redeveloped into high-end flats catering to the global elites, a process that exacerbates a long-standing housing crisis.

This lecture will give an overview of the historical relationship between London’s growth and the river Thames. It will emphasize some of challenges for the city’s sustainability and the role of its iconic river in London’s future.

Birkbeck teaching takes place in the evening, leaving you free to study, volunteer or explore London during the day.

This event will be online.
