The Active Bystander Programme aims to empower students to recognise and challenge unacceptable behaviours on campus and beyond, and help to develop a vibrant, inclusive, and safe community for students at staff at Birkbeck. The training is supported by Birkbeck Students’ Union.  On completion of the programme and submission of feedback forms, you will receive a certificate of completion which will make a great addition to your CV. The programme is made up of two parts:

Part 1: Online module (20-30 minutes)

A link to this online module will be shared with you once you have signed up to the training and should be completed prior to attendance at the workshop (see below).  The module will teach you what constitutes unacceptable behaviours such as bullying, harassment and sexual misconduct, how you can safely intervene if you witness any of these behaviours and introduce you to support services available at Birkbeck and externally. You will be asked to complete a feedback form at the end of this online module.

Part 2: In person workshop (90 minutes)

The workshop will be delivered by Students' Union UCL and will explore the topics covered in the online module in greater depth. In groups, you will discuss scenarios with fellow students, safe methods of intervention, and how you can report and best challenge unacceptable behaviour. Following the workshop you will be asked to complete a feedback form.  This must be completed in order to receive your certificate.
