Come and join us for our MSc in International Development Offer Holder afternoon.

Our MSc in International Development programme is a part of the School of Social Sciences.

We will be running an informal drop-in session where you can ask any questions you have about the compulsory and optional courses on the programme, what your timetable will look like while you are studying at Birkbeck, career possibilities after the MSc, and anything else you would like to know! This event will be hosted by academics who will be teaching you on the programme: current programme director Dr Kalpana Wilson, Professor Jasmine Gideon, Dr Mara Nogueira and Professor Karen Wells.

The MSc in International Development at Birkbeck offers a transformative approach to international development rooted in social justice. It examines the structures, institutions and theories which have shaped international development, the unequal global relationships which underpin it, and the social and political movements which challenge and redefine development in an era of rising global inequalities and climate crisis. It is ideal if you are planning a career in international development or with international organisations and NGOs.

The compulsory modules for this interdisciplinary course introduce you to key debates that have shaped thinking about international development and social justice, and about research in development and how it is conducted. You will also choose from a range of thematic option modules, allowing you to tailor the course according to your personal or career interests. You will develop transferable skills including research skills, team-working, written and oral communication, and qualitative and quantitative data analysis.

You will be taught by academics who draw on their own research to explore themes including:

  • Childhood and International Development
  • Cities in the Global South
  • Climate Justice
  • Development as Colonialism
  • Gender, Sexualities and Development
  • Global Health
  • Political Economy of Development
  • Racism and International Development
  • Revolutions.

Birkbeck teaching takes place in the evening, leaving you free to study, volunteer or explore London during the day.

This event will be online.
