A Trip to Tetlapayac (Ian Christie, Chiemi Shimada, 2023)
After six frustrating months in Hollywood during 1930, where all his projects were turned down, Sergei Eisenstein headed for Mexico to make what he hoped would be a revolutionary epic. This essay film speculates about what that might have become, if he’d ever been able to edit it. Our cast of characters runs from Douglas Fairbanks as the first screen Zorro, stirring the young Sergei’s interest in cinema, up to Antonio Banderas as his most recent incarnation, part-filmed at the Tetlapayac hacienda where Eisenstein was based. Also appearing: Leon Trotsky, Spencer Tracy, Serge Daney and Derek Jarman, filming his Imagining October in Moscow with Peter Wollen.
