Venue: Birkbeck Main Building, Malet Street

Birkbeck has always been different to the university mainstream – and so have its students. Who were Birkbeck students between the early 1960s and 2000s? How did differences in standards and common enterprise with academic staff make the students’ experiences so exceptional?

To find out what motivated part-time and mature learners at the College, join Jonny Matfin for this second event in a series of talks linked to Birkbeck Library’s bicentenary exhibition of archival treasures. Showcasing items from the College Archive and the Library’s image collections, throughout 2023 the changing displays will explore different aspects of Birkbeck’s 200-year history.

Jonny has recently completed a PhD thesis on the contemporary history of Birkbeck. His doctoral work, a microhistory of the college's Department of History, Classics and Archaeology, uses the novel lens of a single academic department in one higher education institution to present fresh perspectives on major changes to UK universities more widely since the early 1960s.

Jonny, who has also taught for the Department of HCA, previously graduated from Birkbeck's MA Historical Research programme as a part-time, mature student. His talk will be followed by a Q&A and refreshments.

You are encouraged to arrive from 6.00pm, in order to view Sport and Spotlights, the Library’s current display of original documents and images focusing on student life at Birkbeck (Level 1).
