The Colombian Peace Process in a new political context

When:
Venue: Birkbeck 43 Gordon Square

No booking required

In 2016, peace negotiations between the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the Government of that country, facilitated by Great Britain, the UNSC and others culminated in a peace agreement ending 60 years of conflict. Hailed as historical by the world media, its implementation has been challenging. With Great Britian as penholder of the agreement, and the Un Security Council as guarantor, the time has come to examine such challenges, the present and future of the agreement. Join member(s) of the Implementation Commission from Colombia and commentators on this crucial international legal and human rights development.

For the first time Colombians elected a left-wing government and a black Vice President. Martha Márquez will discuss what “Paz Total” (Total Peace) will mean for Colombia and what opportunities this creates for the full implementation of the Peace Accord, and to discuss what obstacles are likely to be encounter.

Join in a conversation with the Colombian Human Rights Defender Martha Márquez , the Director of the Centre for Research and Popular Education (CINEP)/Programme for Peace founded in 1972. CINEP is one of the official organisations monitoring the work of the Comisión de Seguimiento, Impulso y Verificación a la Implementación del Acuerdo Final (CSIVI). This commission is made up of Colombian Government Representatives and Former FARC Combatants involved in implementation of the agreements in the 2016 Peace Accord.

As well as working at the grassroots supporting excluded and marginalised communities. CINEP seeks to bring about social change and influence public policy to ensure a human rights perspective and to address poverty.

CINEP undertakes the systematic production of information with investigative rigor in order to produce a solid analysis of the Colombian reality.
