The decarbonisation of our fossil fuel-based energy system is one of the central challenges of this century. It is now recognised that we need to reduce our carbon footprint to zero if catastrophic climate change is to be avoided. But shifting away from fossil fuels is not only a matter of environmental sustainability. It also touches on the question of energy justice (affordability and access) and energy security. In this talk, we will explore the Energy Trilemma triangle in more detail and highlight how spatial thinking is the key to a better understanding of each of its elements.
This lecture is a taster session for the MSc Climate Change programme at Birkbeck. It showcases the programme’s breadth by exploring how we need to employ a broad methodological perspective when tackling climate change and its impacts.
