Arts Essay Writing Workshop 1: What IS an Academic Essay? Characteristics and Misconceptions

When:
Venue: Birkbeck 43 Gordon Square

Book your place

In workshop 1, we pose two fundamental questions:

  • What is characteristic of Academic Essay Writing across ALL disciplines in British academic culture?
  • Are there distinctive features of Academic Writing - especially of essays - in the Arts and Humanities?
  • Why do Russell Group Universities still use this form of assessment?

To answer these questions, we look at such matters as:

  • Developing an argument
  • The part played by your reading in writing your essay
  • Achieving your informed voice in your essay
  • Structure
  • Coherence
  • Rigour
  • Register
  • Referencing

We think about what gets in the way of our ability to write in this manner.

If any of these words seem mysterious to you, come along to this workshop to find out what they involve for Essay Writing - and why.

This workshop allows you to air all those questions you have felt are 'too obvious', or 'too silly' to ask.
