Birkbeck's Big Ideas is a series of FREE events, designed to inspire and bring world class Birkbeck academics to the local community
The series will run every 2nd Wednesday of the month, from July to May 2017. With the first instalment from Prof Ian Crawford.
In this talk Professor Crawford will summarise the new interdisciplinary science of astrobiology -- the search for life in the universe. The talk will begin by describing the planetary and evolutionary context of life on Earth, and then discuss the implications of this perspective for searching for life on Earth.
Building on this perspective, Professor Crawford will then discuss the prospects for finding life, or evidence for past life, elsewhere in our Solar System, for example on the planet Mars and icy moons of the outer solar system, before moving on to consider the potential habitability of planets recently discovered orbiting other stars.
