Working Therapeutically with Children and Adolescents

Course Overview

This Working Therapeutically with Children and Adolescents short course will deepen your understanding about working with children and young adults and refine your therapeutic skills. You will develop essential skills in listening and communication, specifically tailored to the unique needs of children and young people (CYPs).

The course will take you through the professional practice of engaging with CYPs, from the point of referral and through the considerations required throughout.  

It will provide you with the skills to better understand:

• the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
• confidentiality, boundaries and risk when working with CYPs
• navigating complex emotional dynamics
• unconscious processes that influence CYP interactions
• the importance of transitions within the lives of CYPs
• how to respond with empathy in therapeutic settings
• the role of technology in the lives of young people in the twenty-first century.

This Working Therapeutically with Children and Adolescents course is well suited for those wishing to undertake a career in counselling or psychotherapy.

Students who complete this course and have also successfully completed the Master's or Postgraduate Diploma in Psychodynamics of Human Development may be eligible to enter directly onto Year 2 of the MSc in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy with Children and Adolescents. This is subject to application, eligibility and interview.

You will receive a Birkbeck certificate of participation upon completion of the course.

This course is non-credit bearing, so carries no credit points.
