Course Overview

The SME Masterclass: Winning Strategies for Sustainable Growth provides small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with the vital roadmap they need for long-term business success. Having a clear understanding about how business value is not exclusively measured by profitability can help you to understand how some competitors may 'scale at all costs'. You will also enhance your decision-making confidence, which is essential for planning your scaling journey effectively.

In this two-part short course, you will focus on the practical tools you need to conceptualise your business strategy, allowing you to onboard the right people, prioritise quality as you grow and leverage new investment.

In the first session of the course, you will:

  • understand the difference between strategy and tactics, allowing you to re-evaluate any existing plans
  • be able to articulate your core business model and value proposition
  • use common business strategy tools to review your current commercial offerings and market opportunities.

You will also explore and take away practical tools which can help you to anticipate industry shifts, articulate your competitive advantage, and remain agile and competitive in evolving markets. You will gain the toolkit you need to supercharge your business.

In the second session, you will:

  • distinguish between agility and chaos, reflecting on the common challenges that SMEs can face when scaling
  • understand the go-to market tools you can use to analyse demand, scope your competitors and identify opportunities in new markets
  • understand how you can structure your business to promote innovation, transforming new ideas into new products.

You will analyse examples and case studies to understand how to effectively develop your strategy.

The SME Masterclass: Winning Strategies for Sustainable Growth is well-suited for SME leaders looking for extra support and guidance when thinking about taking their business growth to the next level. The course is designed to support you wherever you may be in your scaling journey.

As a learner on this course, you will study alongside fellow professionals wishing to enhance their knowledge in the subject area, giving you the opportunity to make connections with like-minded colleagues and network.

You will receive a Birkbeck certificate of participation upon completing the course.
