RegisterCourse Overview
Please note that each weekly session will be two and a half hours in length and run from 6pm to 8.30pm (please disregard any other timings on this page).
Italian 5 is an interactive short course, leading to CEFR stage C1 (Advanced/C2 degree level)*, which aims to consolidate your fluency and accuracy of language use, both in speaking and writing. Through journalistic and literary texts, it introduces you to more advanced translation skills and takes you up to a degree level of ability. You will consolidate your academic writing in the language by producing a range of high-level essays based on the textual analysis of films and fictional and non-fictional texts. You will improve your oral-aural skills through the use of authentic texts and films, and through discussions and debates in class.
On completing this course you will be expected to reach at least CEFR C1 level, though those students who perform at the highest levels of achievement can be taken to have reached CEFR C2 level.
Assessment consists of two pieces of coursework (10%), a project (30%), and an oral and in-class written assessment (30% each).
As a student on this course, you will study alongside Birkbeck students enrolled on one of our undergraduate or postgraduate courses, giving you the opportunity to network with a range of Birkbeck current students whilst you learn.
* Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Please note: this is only an approximate equivalence.

Entry Requirements
Most of our short courses have no formal entry requirements and are open to all students.

- if you have previously taken Italian 4 with us; or
- if you have studied Italian and/or lived in an Italian-speaking country extensively, and/or have an Italian-speaking family background; or
- if you believe that you may have reached level C1 according to the CEFR.*
If you register for this module, we may ask you to take a placement test, to check your level. We may advise you to go down a class (i.e. to Italian 4).
As part of the enrolment process, you may be required to submit a copy of a suitable form of ID.
International students who wish to come to the UK to study a short course can apply for a Visitor visa. Please note that it is not possible to obtain a Student visa to study a short course.
