Please note that each weekly session will be two hours in length and run from 6pm to 8pm (please disregard any other timings on this page).
Our Introduction to Latin II short course offers you expert, tailored guidance in understanding the basic principles of Classical Latin. It will provide you with a firm basis in the grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary of the language.
Teaching is varied and interactive, including grammar guidance and practice in reading Latin in each class. We focus on enabling you to understand the inner workings of the language and providing you with the necessary tools to read and translate simple passages. There will be new grammar points to be learned every week, as well as translation practice and simple English into Latin composition.
By the end of Introduction to Latin II, you will have gained sufficient knowledge to be able to approach and translate adapted passages of Classical Latin literature. We will be using the texts provided in the course textbook, P. Jones and K. Sidwell, Reading Latin (Cambridge, 2016), as well as additional material which responds to the needs and preferences of the class.
On completing this course, you will be able to:
- understand the basic grammar and syntax of Latin
- read simple (or adapted) Latin prose
- construct simple sentences in Latin
- understand translation processes.
As the second of two courses, you can take Introduction to Latin II after completing our Introduction to Latin I course. The two courses can also be taken separately depending on your proficiency.
As a student on this course, you will study alongside Birkbeck students enrolled on one of our undergraduate or postgraduate courses, giving you the opportunity to network with a range of Birkbeck current students whilst you learn.
This course is non-credit bearing, so carries no credit points.

Entry Requirements
For direct entry onto this course you should already have begun learning Latin, for example on a beginner's course or at a summer school.
As part of the enrolment process, you may be required to submit a copy of a suitable form of ID.
International students who wish to come to the UK to study a short course can apply for a Visitor visa. Please note that it is not possible to obtain a Student visa to study a short course.
How to Register
You register directly onto the classes you would like to take. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis - so register early.
If you want to take more than one short course, you can select each one separately and then register onto them together via our online application portal. There is usually no formal selection process, although some modules may have prerequisites and/or other requirements, which will be specified where relevant.
