Course Overview

Please note that each weekly session will be three hours in length and run from 6pm to 9pm (please disregard any other timings on this page).

Our Intermediate Latin II short course is designed to offer you expert, tailored guidance in advancing your skills in Classical Latin. It equips you with a thorough knowledge of Latin grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary. By the end of this course, you will be confident in reading unadapted Classical Latin prose and verse. We will work through increasingly complex grammar and syntax before branching out to read samples of Classical Latin literature, tailored to the needs and preferences of the class.

Teaching is varied and interactive. The focus will be on enabling you to understand the inner workings of the language and providing you with the necessary tools to read and translate complex passages. You will practise Latin grammar through translation exercises both from Latin into English and from English into Latin. You will also undertake close reading of selected portions of unadapted literary texts, for example, a selected book of Virgil’s Aeneid.

By the end of Intermediate Latin II, you will be able to:

demonstrate an advanced understanding of Latin grammar and syntax
read Classical Latin prose in the original
construct complex sentences in Latin
think reflexively about translation and its difficulties
locate, retrieve and process complex information.

As one of two courses, you can take Intermediate Latin II after you have taken Intermediate Latin I, or you can take them as individual short courses.

As a student on this course, you will study alongside Birkbeck students enrolled on one of our undergraduate or postgraduate courses, giving you the opportunity to network with a range of Birkbeck current students whilst you learn.

This short course runs with classes over three terms every year starting in October.

This course is non-credit bearing, so carries no credit points.

Entry Requirements

For entry onto this course you will need to have completed our Introduction to Latin II or have a grounding in Latin after completing an introductory course equivalent to one year of intensive classes - please contact us if you would like to discuss the correct level for you.

How to Register

You register directly onto the classes you would like to take. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis - so register early.

If you want to take more than one short course, you can select each one separately and then register onto them together via our online application portal. There is usually no formal selection process, although some modules may have prerequisites and/or other requirements, which will be specified where relevant.
