On this Finance for Non-Finance Managers: Financial Markets course, you will develop a greater understanding of the financial responsibilities that exist within your managerial role. We will introduce you to the core principles of financial markets and provide you with an understanding of common finance terminology. You will gain confidence in reading financial statements and an understanding of key financial models and concepts.
You will learn about:
- how to read financial statements
- the characteristics of equity, fixed income and derivatives markets
- time value of money concepts including Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR)
- discount cash flow models
- the Law of One Price and the Efficient Market Hypothesis
- Portfolio Theory and the Capital Asset Pricing Model
- derivative securities such as futures and options.
This course is suitable for those wishing to work, or already working, in the finance industry, or in roles that require a foundational level of finance knowledge. The course does not require any prior study.
Successful completion of the Finance for Non-Finance Managers: Financial Markets course will give you the confidence and skills to read and critically analyse the content of articles in financial publications such as The Financial Times or The Economist.
After this course, you would be ready to embark on further studies in finance, such as the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Level 1.
As a learner on this course, you will study alongside fellow professionals wishing to enhance their knowledge in the subject area, giving you the opportunity to make connections with like-minded colleagues and network.
You will receive a Birkbeck certificate of participation upon completion of the course.
This course is non-credit bearing, so carries no credit points.

This short course has no prerequisites.
As part of the registration process, you may be required to submit a copy of a suitable form of ID.
International students who wish to come to the UK to study a short course can apply for a Visitor visa. Please note that it is not possible to obtain a Student visa to study a short course.
