Module description

This module focuses on providing a research-led, multidisciplinary and applied approach to mental health and well-being focused on the human experience of trauma and addiction from different angles. After completing this module, you will be able to build a key understanding of how trauma and addictive behaviours can impact mental health and well-being in diverse populations.

Indicative module syllabus

  • Theoretical perspectives on health and well-being
  • Trauma: research methods in trauma research; collective trauma; personal/work trauma; recovery/resilience
  • Addictions: theory and methodology; internet addiction; gaming disorder; social media addiction

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • demonstrate a critical understanding of key theories and perspectives which underlie the presentation of collective trauma and addiction
  • understand the various research methods utilised to investigate clinical and non-clinical samples
  • consider wider contextual factors, including individual differences, associated comorbidities and various risk factors that play a part in the aetiology of the human experience of trauma and addiction
  • demonstrate an appreciation for preventative approaches, treatment as well as recovery.
