Module description

This module critically examines education and learning as a contested field within changing global economies and contexts. You will be enabled to distinguish between different social and political perspectives on the role of education for change within contrasting national milieux, over time. One key aim is that you understand the ways in which the ‘skills issue’ has been used in discourse around the need for education as an economic lever in development scenarios in late twentieth- and twenty-first-century states. Additionally, the countervailing arguments around the self-sufficiency of groups purposefully excluded and neglected in different contexts will be examined. The intention is for you to be capable of demonstrating a breadth of interpretative skills applicable to varying social settings at differing times.
