Personal Effectiveness (Level 5)

  • Credit value: 15 credits at Level 5

  • Assessment: a 10-minute individual presentation (30%) and a 1500-word report/personal development plan (70%)

Module description

The key to personal effectiveness is self-awareness: being able to understand your strengths, and how you can capitalise on them, as well as identifying development areas that you need to work on to improve both personally and professionally. Using a range of self-development tools and techniques, this module will help you identify your strengths and weaknesses and use these to develop a personal and professional development plan to take you forward. There will also be an opportunity within the module to develop presentation skills.

  • Background to personal development planning (PDP)
  • Key skills requirements for personal and professional effectiveness
  • SWOT analysis and other tools for identifying areas for future development
  • Effective communication
  • Emotional intelligence and its role in the workplace
  • Coaching and mentoring
  • Conflict and assertiveness

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you will have:

  • gained knowledge and a critical understanding of the themes, issues and skills of personal and professional effectiveness
  • an understanding of how to use SWOT analysis and other tools and techniques to identify areas for future development
  • identified a range of personal development skills needed to practise management effectively
  • gained a critical understanding of differing management styles
  • gained a critical understanding of the skills of coaching and their application within management
  • develoloped effective presentation skills
  • developed a personal development plan, which identifies the skills development needs and the steps required to take your career forwards.
