Module description

This module will provide you with the IT skills you will require throughout your programme of studies. It will cover word-processing, spreadsheets, locating and accessing data online, use of the college’s Virtual Learning Environment and other college websites, and managing file storage and backups.

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • prepare documents using a word-processing package, including formatting, pagination, referencing and inserting charts/tables/images
  • create spreadsheets to present and analyse data, including use of formatting, formulas and graphs/charts, and importing economic data from online sources
  • use the College’s Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle) to access learning resources, engage in news forum discussions, use online assessment activities and submit assessments online
  • use other College websites to access the library, learning development and My Birkbeck services
  • manage backups and safe storage of your work, including accessing your Birkbeck ITS storage space and cloud storage options
  • find and familiarise yourself with new sources of data and information and, where possible, adapt them to your own needs.
