Module description

On this module you will gain the IT skills required throughout your programme of study, including:

  • word-processing
  • spreadsheets
  • locating and accessing data online
  • use of the College’s virtual learning environment and other College websites
  • managing file storage and backups.

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • prepare documents using a word-processing package, including formatting, pagination, referencing and inserting charts/tables/images
  • create spreadsheets to present and analyse data, including use of formatting, formulas and graphs/charts, and importing economic data from online sources
  • use the College’s virtual learning environment (Moodle) to access learning resources, engage in news forum discussions, use online assessment activities and submit assessments online
  • use other College websites to access the library, learning development and My Birkbeck services
  • manage backups and safe storage of your work, including accessing your Birkbeck ITS storage space and cloud storage options
  • find and familiarise yourself with new sources of data and information and, where possible, adapt them to your own needs.
